There are endless resources explaining how you and your business can make the most of social media. But sometimes the best way to hone your own technique is to watch and learn.
Certain celebrities have it down to an art. And many businesses put time and money into constantly updating their Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts. So if you want to join their ranks, and stand out in the infinite crowd of voices online, a savvy intern won’t cut it anymore: You need a plan.
Follow these five accounts to start the conversation about your social media plan for 2015:
1. How did one man go from sci-fi fan fodder on “Star Trek” to world-renowned humorist and equality advocate? Well, first he garnered international interest when he came out as a gay man in 2005. And then he kept that momentum going by introducing fans to his now-notorious wit that’s grown him an almost cult-like following on Facebook (8.1 million followers and counting). For the very best memes, links and humor anywhere on the World Wide Web, plus straight talk about social issues just when you need it, you must “Like” the fan page for George Takei.
2. Actress Olivia Wilde has moved on from “House,” and now she’s focusing her time on an even bigger starring role: motherhood. This sexy mom likes to bake, share puppy pics and crack a joke with the best of ’em. In the meantime, she’s also started a socially conscious e-commerce store, Conscious Co . 3. Speaking of influential women: Arianna Huffington may have helped found a media empire. But she’s a person first. Her Twitter profile reminds you of this by labeling her a “mother, sister, flat shoe advocate, sleep evangelist.” By following her on @AriannaHuff, you not only get curated links to the best of what’s happening from Huffington Post, you also get a peek into her everyday thoughts on various themes from around the world.
4. A picture is worth a thousand words – or at least 140 characters. One of the most popular Twitter accounts shares historic pictures, mostly black-and-white. This serves two purposes, which is not only to celebrate photography but to also bring interest to the stories and events that formed life today as we know it. But, because it’s in small bursts and carefully chosen images, it makes people pay attention and encourages discourse and shares. So, you don’t always have to be pithy and clever to catch someone’s interest. Sometimes a photo says it all. See how it’s done at @Historic_Pics.
5. And, of course, we can’t forget the strategists like Glen Gilmore who devote all of their energy to learning about social media, collecting data, and passing that along to followers in little bites any layman can understand.
